Named drivers are people you choose to drive your Motability Scheme vehicle. Up to three named drivers are included as part of your lease; these can be yourself, friends, family or carers. Two named drivers can be nominated when you place your application, and a third driver can be added during your lease. In order to protect the Scheme, there are a few rules surrounding who can drive your vehicle:
If none of the named drivers live at the disabled customer’s address, or the disabled customer lives in a care home where a number of drivers have access to the vehicle, we may consider fitting a location tracker. This is to ensure the customer is gaining direct benefit from the vehicle. We will always speak to the customer to discuss this in advance of a tracker being fitted.
Drivers under 25 are restricted to petrol, diesel or hybrid cars with an ABI Insurance Group of 16 or lower and with a power output of 120 brake horsepower (BHP) or less. For electric cars, drivers under 25 are restricted to cars with an ABI Insurance Group of 21 or lower and with a power output of 140 brake horsepower (BHP) or less. Therefore, before choosing a car please consider whether you will require a driver aged under 25 during your lease. Only one named driver under 21 is permitted – this could be the disabled customer, or another driver living at the same address. Provisional licence holders can also learn to drive in Motability Scheme vehicles, provided a few other conditions are met.
We will only accept drivers who have a legally valid driving licence. Drivers with a non-UK driving licence will be subject to additional checks.

Only drivers approved by RSAM’s standard insurance underwriting criteria and named under the permitted drivers section of your Certificate of Motor Insurance are covered to drive your vehicle. Please note that drivers who have their own fully comprehensive insurance cover are not permitted to drive your Motability Scheme vehicle, unless they have been added to your lease as a named driver.
